Environment of Care (EC) standards suggest incorporating the arts by stipulating that:

  • the hospital establish an environment that meets the needs of patients, encourages a positive self-image, and respects their human dignity (EC 3.1)
  • the built environment support the development and maintenance of the patient’s interests, skills, and opportunities for personal growth (EC 3.4)

A few examples cited are art exhibits, musical performances, access to nature, and opportunities for social interaction among patients through recreational interchange – which means creative nursing interventions.
